ProfileBill Sipfle(Published .November 2004)
One of the unsung, behind-the-scenes heroes of the Ashland Club is Bill Sipfle. He stands ready to assist, support, fill-in or even take over, if need be, to make the Ashland Club the smooth-running, successful organization that it is. AND he has been doing this for years! Bill has been Manager of the club for 11 of the 13 years he has lived in the Valley; he is currently holding an office on the Ashland Board; and he has served as president for two terms (four years) and as treasurer for five years. (He says he will probably "re-up" in December when four new Board members are nominated.) As a qualified director, he can pinch-hit for Director Bernadine Lacy, if necessary. Bill believes the success of the Ashland Club is attributable to great directors and dedicated volunteers. Volunteers serve on the Board, set up tables, sign players in and collect fees, contribute snacks, and clean up after the sessions. One of Bill's many responsibilities as Manager is to interface with the ACBL. Low entry fees are another plus. The non-profit status of the club, as well as favorable rent for the Grange, has kept the entry fee at $2.50. In addition to his work at the Ashland Club, Bill has served on the Unit Board for two terms as treasurer. He has indicated that be would be willing to serve on the Unit Board, again when new Board members are elected in December. Also, Bill was the founder and editor of Unit 484 News (the forerunner of Bridge News). He published that newsletter for six years. Bill's current passion, beside bridge, is tennis, which he plays four times per week. After serious health problems last year, he is proud to say that his game "is as good as it has ever been." He also bikes and hikes to stay fit. We give a special salute and "thank you" to Bill for his many contributions to the bridge organization, and we have to add that Bill is a true gentleman at the tables. He is always polite, friendly and complimentary to other players, and he plays a great game of bridge! |
