Gee Gee Walker

(Published January 2005)

Gee Gee, one of the new members of the Unit board is "eager to get to know and work with all the wonderful people on the board." Gee Gee is a relative newcomer to our bridge scene. She began playing a little over a year ago, and she already has endeared herself to one and all. She has earned an impressive 85 master points this year.

In March, she (and her partner Diane McCaskill) will fly to the Nationals (Pittsburgh, Penn.) to compete in the two-day, four session, Flight C, North American Pairs event. Unit 484 is subsidizing their flight and hotel, because of their winning the event at the Reno Regional last October.

The Walkers moved to the Rogue Valley in 2002 after doing some extensive research on delightful places to retire. John, Gee Gee's husband of 31 years, works as an importer of tropical fish. He orders from all over the world and makes sure that customs regulations are met and that packaging is done properly. John's passion is pool. He and his team win often. The Walkers added on a special room to their home in Medford in which to play the game.

Gee Gee and John met at a duplicate bridge table. They married and even played bridge on their honeymoon. Their careers and having three children intervened, and John and Gee Gee gave up the game for 30 years. The couple still remembers their elation after winning a 99er event during Bridge Week in 1973 at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

Gee Gee is a Texas girl-born in Houston, raised in Hereford and graduated from the University of Texas at Austin. (She says it takes only about ten minutes for her Southern accent to return upon entering the state.) Her father was a dynamite domino player, and her parents taught her how to play bridge. As a high school student, Gee Gee developed a love for foreign travel after she spent a year abroad as an exchange student. After she earned her college degree, in Spanish and Russian, she traveled to South America and got a job teaching in a school in Ecuador for six years. She made teaching her career, and she taught high school Spanish until she retired in 2002.

Besides their two grandchildren, who are "the apples of their eyes," the Walkers adore their standard poodle, Pepper. He is 8 years old and a very mellow companion to them. Gee Gee's other passion is quilting. She especially loves to make Baltimore quilts.

Though she has a total of 285 master points, Gee Gee says her goal is not to become a life master. Her goal is simply to improve her game. She is tremendously grateful for all the tips she has received from players at the tables. She has played with many different partners, and she finds that "everybody in our organization is helpful and so nice."

She and Diane are especially grateful to Bernadine Lacy for her support and encouragement in their quest to compete at the national level. We feel especially grateful to have Gee Gee in our midst, and we'll all be pulling for her and Diane to win Flight C at the Nationals.
